Tyler Glenn was this year’s recipient of the DBOA’s prestigious Rookie of the Year award. DBOA.ca had a chance to sit down with him recently for an exclusive interview. Here’s how it went down…
Q. How long have you been officiating hockey and what made you want to start?
A. This was my first year of officiating. I decided to start because I had recently decided to stop playing organized hockey but I still love the sport and wanted to find a way to stay involved.
Q. What are your favourite parts of being a hockey official?
A. Meeting new people.
Q. What things have you learned through officiating that you’ve been able to apply to other aspects of your life?
A. Officiating helped me further develop my confidence and my leadership skills. It also helped with my communication skills.
Q. What is your real job / day job, and are there any learnings from that work that have been helpful in your officiating?
A. I am a high school student so that requires me to manage my time well. I am also a black belt in karate. As such, I need to be responsible, disciplined and respectful, all skills you need for officiating.
Q. What are your officiating goals for the future?
A. I would like to continue officiating and hopefully move up to officiating competitive hockey at a more senior level. Who knows? Maybe I can even make a career out of it.
Q. Any favourite stories from working hockey games?
A. Since it was my first year officiating, I was assigned a lot of minor novice games. During the entire season, I don’t think I made it to the end of one of those games with two goalies still in nets! Some of them just quit in the middle of the game because they decided they were done.
Q. How cool is it to win this award?
A. It was great to win the Rookie of the Year award. I really appreciate the recognition from my mentors and my supervisors. They were there to support and help me all through the season and I worked hard to incorporate the feedback and pointers they provided me with. It is also a great confidence builder and I am already looking forward to next season.
